Abstract: Addresses whether and how self-awareness is involved in 3 of 6 kinds of consciousness, namely (1) consciousness-sub-4, the immediate (“inner”) awareness that we have of our mental-occurrence instances, (2) consciousness-sub-5, the constitution of the totality of mental-occurrence instances which is the conscious being, and (3) consciousness-sub-6, the adaptive general mode of the mind’s functioning that we instantiate for most waking time. Consciousness-sub-4 is an occurrent self-awareness because, in being conscious-sub-4, it is part of oneself that one has occurrent awareness of; although one need not also, at those times, be aware of oneself as such. Consciousness-sub-5 consists of those of one’s mental-occurrence instances that one is now conscious-sub-4 as one’s own or one can remember being conscious-sub-4 of. The common concept of consciousness-sub-6 does not imply an answer to the question of self-awareness, and no account of consciousness-sub-6 successfully distinguishes it from all of the mind’s other general operating modes.
