| Abstract: | Discusses the difference between spheres and streams of consciousness in the explanation of behavior produced after the cerebral hemispheres have been deconnected from each other. Also receiving particular attention are certain agnostic and skeptical positions that question disunified consciousness in commissurotomized patients or that deny consciousness to the mute hemisphere. Issues addressed include the position that functional unity of brain processes results in a unity of consciousness, the localization and distinctiveness of streams of consciousness, interhemispheric fusion processes, linguistic requirements, and the idea that distinct streams of consciousness require only indirect mutual awareness.
