| Abstract: | Argues that Freud’s (published from 1887-2938) conception of the psychical apparatus provides direct access to consciousness of conscious psychical processes. Consciousness of being conscious of psychical processes is termed tertiary consciousness (TC). TC can be included in Freud’s classification of primary and secondary consciousness. A distinction is made between the TC occurring in the consciousness and perceptual systems. It is concluded that the function of TC is consistent with Freud’s comments on the function of the perception-consciousness system in reality testing. ((c) 1999 APA/PsycINFO, all rights reserved) |
