Abstract: | Distinguishes the concept of consciousness, “the awareness meaning” from 5 other Oxford English Dictionary (OED) concepts of consciousness: “the interpersonal meaning,” “the personal meaning,” “the reflective meaning,” “the unitive meaning,” and “the general state meaning.” There is a sense in which any instance of consciousness-sub-3 is an instance of someone’s being aware of something (or that something is the case). However, the same is true of the other 5 meanings of consciousness. All instances of consciousness in any of the 6 OED senses are instances of someone’s being aware of something. Consciousness differs from the other 5 OED kinds of consciousness in that the awareness ingredient, which all 6 meanings possess, is the only ingredient of the 3rd meaning. Consciousness is no more and no less than awareness in a certain sense. ((c) 1999 APA/PsycINFO, all rights reserved) |
