| Abstract: | Examines how W. James and S. Freud assigned crucial systematic importance to consciousness, discussing the topic in a way not common among present-day psychologists. It is suggested that what James and Freud had to say is highly relevant to many issues naturally arising as psychologists again begin work on the theory of consciousness. Therefore, despite psychology’s longstanding bias against consciousness, psychologists considering the topic need not start from scratch or from a perspective external to the field of science.
