Abstract: | Combines Freud’s influential conception of the mind with a theory of consciousness to provide a conceptual framework of consciousness. Basic or intrinsic consciousness is explored, and derived consciousness, in which unconscious psychical processes become conscious, is also examined. The development by psychology of a conception of consciousness is important due to the relationship between consciousness and unconsciousness in psychoanalysis.
